HOUMA, La. (AP) - The victim of a fatal car crash in Houma earlier this week has been identified as an 18-year-old from Thibodaux.
The family of Garrett Velasquez believes he purposely drove his car in to a tree in Houma on Monday. Police tell The Courier newspaper in Houma that it appears to be a suicide, but they are continuing their investigation.
Velasquez was driving about 70 mph on a road with a 25-mph speed limit, witnesses said, and never applied the brakes.
His family says Velasquez had dropped out of Thibodaux High School, where he rarely stayed interested in one subject. However, he had shown a talent for art. His work was featured at an art gallery in Houma in June and he was creating art for a downtown Houma building.
