An Abbeville resident is still in shock after discovering a body, under a house, late this afternoon. Police were called to the home at the intersection of Louisiana and 9th Streets around two this afternoon. Wednesday night a lot was still unknown, and the woman who found the body tells her story.
Wednesday started like any other, but for this Abbeville resident, it took a disturbing twist right after lunch.
"It tore me apart. I'm still nervous, shaking inside," said the woman.
While outside doing yard work the woman, who wants to remain anonymous, says she started smelling a very strong, foul odor coming from the vacant house next door. Never expecting what she'd find.
"I saw flies buzzing around. The flies led me to what was going on really. I thought it was a dog dead under the house, so i went where the flies were at. I looked up under the house and I said 'Oh my God.' I started screaming and hollering. I saw two feet, two legs," she said.
Police say the body of a black man was underneath the house. And while authorities are still working to identify the man, neighbors tell KATC they believe it's Eugene Williams who's been missing since early last month. Witnesses told us the clothes on the victim matched the exact description of the clothes Williams was last seen wearing when he disappeared.
"I've never seen anything like that," she said. "It was scary. It had me nervous, really nervous."
Police say the body was there for more than a couple of days. But the cause of death is still unknown.
"This is a quiet neighborhood. This really is a shock," she said.
At this time the death has not been deemed a homicide. Police say it's still considered a suspicious death.
