More relief is coming to the gas gump, as one grocery store launches a new rewards program. Winn Dixie kicked off the program Wednesday, which allows shoppers to save in the store as well as at Shell gas stations.
It's called "Fuelperks." For every $50 customers spend in the store, they receive a 5-cent-per-gallon discount at the gas station. Rewards are stackable. Which means the more shoppers spend, the more they earn. For example, if a customer spends $100, they will earn 10 cents per gallon, if they spend $150, they earn 15 cents per gallon, etc.
Wednesday morning, customers were steadily going in to the Winn Dixie on Moss St. in Lafayette. Store Director, Wayne Wiggins, says the program allows the company to give back to the community.
"I think the community is looking for anything right now to save... the way the economy is, and if we can do our part, Winn Dixie, to help save, we definitely are proud to be able to do that."
The initiative is a new effort in Louisiana. But, Wiggins says this same program has already proven effective in other states. Since 2008, customers in the Jacksonville, FL area have saved over $4.6 Million.
There are 54 participating Shell gas stations in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Acadiana. For more information, such as account balance and participating Shell redemption sites, visit www.winn-dixie.com/fuelperks.
