Will Smith's Release From Jail Illegal?

We've learned more about the Lafayette judge and her relationship with a Saints player released from jail over the weekend.
KATC's Maddie Garrett found out Will Smith and Judge Phyllis Keaty knew each other before his arrest.
On the judge's facebook page was a picture of her and the Smiths'. The pictures were taken at a fundraiser for the judge held at River Oaks.
You won't be able to find these photos on Keaty's facebook page anymore.
They were removed following our five o'clock report.
The controversy started when Will Smith was arrested Saturday morning and charged with domestic abuse battery.
The inmate release form from the sheriff's office shows that Judge Keaty did set a one thousand dollar bond, but then let Smith go without paying a dime.
However, according to a new law passed in August, Smith's release could be illegal.
ACT 584 states that a person arrested for domestic abuse battery shall not be released on his own recognizance without posting bail.
Representative Mike Danahay, who wrote that law, says there are no exceptions to the bail act.
He says, "it is disturbing. we certainly felt like the statute was very clear and it is disturbing that it would possibly be violated."
We have tried calling Judge Keaty, but have not received an immediate response.
