The National Red Dirt and Catahoula Wildlife Management Preserves will be open for hunting as published in the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) hunting regulations. The Preserves are part of the Kisatchie National Forest, and are managed in cooperation with the LDWF, with specific seasons and bag limits.
Hunters are advised that for the October 19 - 20 deer primitive still-hunt, the requirement for a self-clearing daily permit and mandatory deer checks have been suspended. A Red Dirt or Catahoula Preserve season hunting permit is required, along with a State of Louisiana hunting license. Permits may be obtained at each preserve check station, on the Kisatchie National Forest website www.fs.usda.gov/kisatchie, at the Forest Supervisor's office located at 2500 Shreveport Hwy in Pineville or any Forest Service District Ranger office (outside in front of offices) in Alexandria, Bellwood, Bentley or Winnfield, Louisiana, and are free of charge. These permits contain specific dates for game in question, with the respective weapon that is allowed.
The Red Dirt National Preserve is located in southern Natchitoches Parish, between Gorum and Bellwood. The Catahoula Preserve is on the Grant-Winn parish line near Williana, Louisiana.
For more information about hunting on the Wildlife Management Preserve areas contact Mike Dawson, Kisatchie District Ranger at (318) 472-1840.
