BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission says the shrimp season will open at 6 a.m. May 13 from Bayou Lafourche west to the western shore of Vermilion Bay, opening May 20 and 27 in other inshore waters.
Most outside waters already are open, but a small area that is closed to shrimping will open May 13.
A news release says department biologists have made about 550 trawls throughout Louisiana's estuaries and nearshore waters so they can estimate when at least half of the inshore brown shrimp will be at least 100 per pound.
The department says inside waters will open at 6 a.m. May 20 from the eastern shore of Bayou Lafourche to the eastern shore of the South Pass of the Mississippi River.
For the rest of the coast, inside waters will open at 6 a.m. May 27.
