The St. Landry Parish Council introduced a proposal Wednesday night to bring a two cent sales tax to the voters on the November ballot to improve road conditions in rural parts of the parish.
Many of you asked us where do the taxes collected from Evangeline Downs go?
Fifty-five percent of the money goes directly back to the parish. St. Landry Parish President Bill Fontenot tells us that money is routinely budgeted for road and bridge maintenance only.
The other 45 percent of Racino money goes to other areas of the parish:
St. Landry Airport: 1.5%
Economic Development: 5.0%
District Attorney: 3.5%
Registrar of Voters: 1.5%
Opelousas City Police Department: 6.0%
St. Landry Parish Municipal Association: 21.0%
St. Landry Parish Judicial System: 2.0%
St. Landry Parish Clerk of Court: 1.5%
St. Landry Parish Assessor's Office 1.5%
The 55 percent the parish receives is not dedicated funds which means it can be used however parish leaders decide.
