MONROE, La. (AP) - Police officers in northeastern Louisiana are discovering weapons they are confiscating when making arrests are just as good as their own.
West Monroe Maj. James Keys says that he's noticed officers coming in with apprehended AK-47s.
Keys said police have arrested suspects with older model Colt pistols, but he also has seen weapons not too different from their own.
Monroe Police Cpl. Scott Ferguson said police find firearms of all calibers on suspects.
Ferguson said most guns used in committing crimes are bought on the street, instead of from a legitimate retailer, because they are cheaper. He said some rifles and shotguns picked up by police are sometimes found to have been taken in a burglary.
