Being a single parent can be tough, especially when one parent fails to pay child support. But a new website is cracking down on deadbeat moms and dads, by providing a searchable data base that currently has over 53,000 people listed as failing to pay up.
"We do what we have to do to get by and survive, but it's kind of not fair that we have to do it on our own when someone else should be doing his part," said a single mom.
While this mother doesn't want her identity revealed, she did tell KATC she's been struggling for years to get her son's father to pay child support.
"It took them a year just to get him into court," she said.
In fact, on Tuesday the father, Billy Louviere, was released from jail after paying roughly $7,000 he owed in child support. This mother said it's not about the money, but about doing the right thing for her child.
"It hurts, mainly because my son is never going to have a dad. But I have to do everything I can for him as a mom to make up for that," she said.
In Louisiana, parents owe a total of $1.2 billion in unpaid child support, with at least 81 currently owing $100,000 or more. Now you can look these deadbeat parents up online.
The searchable data base can be found on the Department of Children and Family Services' website. Deadbeats can be found by name, city, amount owed or parish.
"Hopefully it'll benefit some of the parents who are owed thousands and thousands of dollars who are really struggling," said the mother.
