American Red Cross volunteers are receiving information and responding to damage reports. As bad weather threatens most of south Louisiana, here are several safety checklists to help our neighbors:

Thunderstorms: Including postponing outdoor activities, staying in substantial buildings and away from windows, and avoiding electrical equipment.

Tornados: Including sheltering in a small, inner room with no windows and, after wind-related damage, avoiding fallen power lines and staying out of damaged buildings.

Floods: Including avoiding standing water (six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off your feet and less than two feet of water can sweep away a vehicle.

Power outages: Including keeping refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible, unplugging unnecessary electrical equipment and, when using a generator, connecting equipment you want powered to directly to the generator.
