LAFAYETTE, La. - The second-ranked Ragin' Cajuns baseball team scored in every inning but the seventh on Tuesday night as the squad rolled to a 16-0 victory over in-state rival Tulane in a non-conference game at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.
Louisiana (27-3, 8-1 Sun Belt) tied a season-high with 22 hits in the contest as 12 of the 13 position players who saw action recorded at least one hit. The Cajuns had seven extra-base hits including a season-best three triples.
Caleb Adams, Jace Conrad and Dylan Butler each had three hits in the game. Adams was a perfect 3-for-3 with a triple and drove in a run. Butler was also one of three players to post three RBI on the night.
With his single in the first inning, Adams increased his on base streak to 24 games. Conrad also increased his on base streak to 20 games and moved his team-leading hit streak to 14 games.
"Tonight it was contagious," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "I think it was setup with pitching and good defense. That's what we really wanted coming off of an emotional weekend."
Senior Matt Hicks picked up his fourth win of the season in his first career start throwing three scoreless innings with a strikeout.
The Cajuns had five relievers combine to complete the shutout allowing just one hit in the final six innings of the game. Only one Green Wave base runner reached second in the contest as Louisiana pitching faced three more then the minimum holding Tulane (13-14, 5-6 C-USA) to just three hits.
"They did a great job," Robichaux added. "Every one of them came in and handled up on what they needed to do. We had everyone out there getting after it and charging the strike zone. When you do that, it creates a good tempo for the night. Matt Hicks will set a good tempo, and that's why we started him."
Louisiana jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first RBI groundout to short by Tyler Girouard and an infield single by Adams scoring Seth Harrison from second. Harrison's single in the inning increased his streak of reaching base to 18 games.
Blake Trahan added a run in the second inning driving in Butler on a two-out single to left. Butler tripled to lead off the inning.
Ryan Leonards came home to score a run in the third on a throw down to second to make the score 4-0.
After an RBI single in the fourth by Chase Compton, the Cajuns tallied two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a solo blast to right field by Girouard and a RBI single by Butler.
The Ragin' Cajuns put the game out of reach in the sixth scoring six runs on seven hits including a three-run pinch-hit home run by Evan Powell over the fence in left field.
Following a scoreless seventh inning, the Cajuns added three more runs to cap the scoring in the contest.
Louisiana returns to action this weekend against Troy with a three-game series on the road against the Trojans. The two teams open play on Friday at 6 p.m. Saturday's contest will be broadcast on the Sun Belt Network with first pitch set for 3 p.m., while the series finale is at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
