Water emergency stays despite rain

SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - Water levels have been up in four monitoring wells for more than 85 straight days, but the state-imposed groundwater emergency in two areas of south Caddo Parish remains in place.

The state Department of Natural Resources' conservation office said in a news release that it will continue to "closely and carefully monitor hydrologic conditions" in the areas and determine if and when the water use restrictions should be removed.

The Times reports most of the area is no longer in a drought because of measurable rainfall recorded since November. But that wasn't the case last summer when the lack of significant precipitation for almost two years, combined with higher than normal withdrawal of ground water, created water shortages in areas in and around Ellerbe Road and in Keithville.
