Topping off the year that was with a drink, or two is a tradition for many, but if that tradition also involves getting behind the wheel, watch out.

Trooper Stephen Hammons with the Louisiana State Police says troopers will be on the lookout for impaired drivers all week long because of holiday festivities.

"We want to remind you if you are drinking, do not put yourself at risk to receive a DWI," Hammons said.

It's advice troopers hope the public will take to heart. State Police are ending 2009 on a high note, according to year-end statistics, in 2009 1,835 people were arrested for DUI, down some 9% from last year.

"We have the same number of troopers on the road, doing the same job that they were last year, and for them to locate fewer impaired drivers this year compared to last year tells us that compliance is up," Hammons said.

Troopers are hoping compliance remains up, and not just for New Years Eve.
