LAFAYETTE, La. - Samantha Walsh hit a walk-off, three-run home run in the first game of the day and Victoria Brown allowed just three hits over six innings in game two, as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns softball team swept the ULM Warhawks, 8-6 and 7-0 at Lamson Park on Saturday.
Walsh's homer was her second walk-off in as many home games, giving the Cajuns an 8-6 victory. She walked the Cajuns (40-7-1, 17-1) off in their last home game on April 16, against McNeese State.
The Cajuns jumped ahead in the first inning with back-to-back RBI base hits, first a single from Walsh scoring Haley Hayden, and then a triple from Shellie Landry to bring home Walsh, to give the Cajuns a 2-0 lead.
Walsh added to the Cajuns' lead with her second RBI of the game, driving in Natalie Fernandez in the second, to make it 3-0.
After ULM found the scoreboard with a two-run homer from Alexis Cacioppo in the top of the fourth, the Cajuns doubled their lead in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single from Corin Voinché, giving the Cajuns a 4-2 lead.
The Warhawks took the first lead of the game with Cacioppo's second home run, this one a grand slam, in the top of the fifth inning, putting ULM up 6-4.
Hayden cut the Warhawks' lead in half on the first pitch of the bottom of the inning, with her 14th home run of the season to make it 6-5. Louisiana would get two runners in scoring position with two outs in the inning, but couldn't get the tying run across.
After going scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, the Cajuns came up to the plate with their backs against the wall, trailing by one in the bottom of the seventh.
Hayden led the inning off with a walk, and was immediately advanced to third on a double to the left-center gap by Lexie Elkins, putting runners on second and third with no out and the winning run on second.
That's when Walsh did her thing, taking the first pitch she saw to deep left center to send the Cajuns into game two on a high note, winning 8-6.
Christina Hamilton tossed the complete game for the Cajuns, allowing six runs on four hits while striking out six batters. She improved to 22-1 on the season, winning her last 19 decisions.
The Cajuns opened up a big lead early in the first game, scoring six runs in the first inning, giving Brown a nice lead to work with. The six runs came off two hits, four walks and a hit batter, highlighted by a pair of two-run singles from Landry and Fernandez, and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to Sara Corbello and a bases-loaded walk to Voinché.
The Cajuns added to their lead in the sixth inning, with a second RBI single in the game by Fernandez to give the Cajuns the 7-0 lead, and the doubleheader sweep.
The game-two win was the 40th win of the season for the Cajuns, marking the 12th consecutive season head coach Michael Lotief has lead his team to 40-or-more wins, a feat he has never failed to achieve.
The Cajuns and Warhawks will conclude the 2014 regular season tomorrow at 1 p.m., with Senior Day at Lamson Park. Before the game the Cajuns will honor seniors Natalie Fernandez and Shelbi Redfearn.
The Cajuns clinched the 2014 Sun Belt regular season crown last weekend, thus earning the top seed in the 2014 SBC Softball Championships, and will play their first game of the tournament on Thursday, May 8 at 5 p.m., against an opponent still to be determined.
