Lafayette, LA- Students from the W.D. & Mary Baker Smith Career Center participated in the SKILLS/USA State Championship held in New Orleans on April 3-5th 2013. The Championships offer students an opportunity to showcase their vocational skills in a competitive form. Students participating in the SkillsUSA Championships, complete a series of Professional Development and Vocational/Project base testing during the event.
The Career Center was honored to bring home 3 -State Medals, these events included; Seth Stelly 1st in Fashion Design, Jasmine Wagnon 2nd in Fashion Design, and Jany Trahan 3rd place in Photography. Jany Trahan was also elected to serve as a State Officer for the 2013-2014 School year.
SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization, partnering students, teachers and industry representatives whom work together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. Established to help each and every student excel; SkillsUSA aids high school and college students who are preparing for careers in technical, skilled and service occupations, including health occupations and further education programs. Students are also taught employability skills such as communication, problem solving and leadership in conjunction with their trade, technical and service occupations skills. SkillsUSA was formerly known as VICA (the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America).
