ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - Voters in Rapides Parish have approved a $23 million proposal to renovate and upgrade the aging Rapides Parish Coliseum on Louisiana Highway 28 West in Alexandria. The proposal passed with more than 52 percent of the vote.
The Town Talk reports the Coliseum's $23 million bond issue will be backed by a 2.5-mill property tax. As part of the proposal, voters also passed a one-mill tax to pay for coliseum operations and maintenance over 20 years.
Plans for the "new" coliseum include giving the arena a new, modern exterior for curb appeal; replacing the seating and expanding capacity by more than 3,000; rebuilding the parking area and nearly doubling available spaces; a complete overhaul of the facility's technology; new stages, dressing rooms and a basketball floor.
