U.S. Sen. David Vitter has asked the state health agency to investigate allegations that a Baton Rouge abortion provider is violating patients' privacy rights.
The New Orleans Advocate reports Vitter says his office has received "credible information" that Delta Clinic has violated the federal Health Information Portability and Accountability Act, known as HIPAA.
In a letter Tuesday to state Department of Health and Hospitals Secretary Kathy Kliebert, Vitter says "there needs to be serious consequences" for the facility if the allegations are proved true.
Kliebert says DHH has referred the allegations to the FBI, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Office of Civil Rights, which handles enforcement of the HIPAA rule.
Delta Clinic administrator Sylvia Cochran did not return a phone call seeking comment.
