Vitter Issues Statement Remembering Hurricane Rita
(Washington, D.C.) - U.S. Sen. David Vitter today issued the following statement recognizing the fourth anniversary of Hurricane Rita:
"In the aftermath of Hurricane Rita, the people of southwest Louisiana showed their strength and resolve. Four years later, the recovery process continues in many areas, which have since had to deal with the additional impacts of Hurricanes Gustav and Ike.
"This year, we saw some real progress as FEMA agreed to allow rebuilding projects in begin in the V-Zones, and the removal of this bureaucratic roadblock will help jumpstart the remaining aspects of recovery in southwest Louisiana.
"While media coverage tends to focus on Hurricane Katrina, the impact of Rita on Louisiana was a highly destructive event, causing billions of dollars in damage and leaving hundreds of thousands of homes without power. Hurricane Rita's impact on southwest Louisiana cannot be understated.
"I will continue fighting to ensure that the people of southwest Louisiana receive the assistance they deserve as we continue to rebuild," said Vitter.
