Republican Sen. David Vitter raised more than $1.2 million for his 2010 re-election campaign from July through September, giving him a strong financial lead over his Democratic rival, Rep. Charlie Melancon (mel-AHN'-sohn), who raised just over $751,000.
The figures are in campaign finance report summaries filed with the Federal Election Commission this week. The deadline for filing the third-quarter reports was Thursday.
Vitter's report lists $3.9 million in cash on hand. Melancon, a congressman from southeastern Louisiana, lists $1.8 million.
