Vitter Continues To Outpace Melancon In Fundraising

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Republican U.S. Sen. David Vitter
continues to outpace his Democratic challenger, U.S. Rep. Charlie
Melancon, in fundraising for this fall's Senate race, with Vitter
again raking in twice as much campaign cash in the most recent
reporting period.
Vitter raised $1.1 million in the first quarter of the year,
compared to $518,000 for Melancon, according to finance reports
filed with the Federal Election Commission on Thursday and provided
by the campaigns.
Melancon, a three-term congressman from Napoleonville in south
Louisiana, reported having nearly $2.3 million in cash on hand as
of March 31, the end of the reporting period. Vitter, a first-term
senator from the New Orleans suburb of Metairie, reported a $5
million balance.
The primary election is scheduled for Aug. 28, with the general
election Nov. 2.
