A Memorial Day tragedy for a Ville Platte family. Corey Soileau, 19, drowned while cooling off in the Toledo Bend Reservoir.
Soileau lost his father to drowning ten years before the water took his life. "We all love him and miss him and pray he's in a better place," said his cousin John Holden.
The drowning happened Monday around 6:30 p.m. The Ville Platte teen took a dip, after a day of fishing with friends. He disappeared in a cove near Pilcher Road in Sabine Parish.
His body was found 30 minutes after he vanished, only six feet under water. The Sabine Parish Deputy Coroner says it appears to be an accidental drowning.
Soileau's family says he had cerebral palsy. "He couldn't really get around that good, but he didn't let it slow him down," said Holden.
Family and friends said Soileau would fall when he walked, but didn't want to rely on a walker. They tell KATC he was a competent swimmer. "He loved it, he loved the water and stuff and he knew how to swim, just not extremely well," said his aunt Becky Soileau.
Tuesday Soileau's family gathered outside Ardoin Funeral Home, trying to understand, wishing they could've prevented this tragedy. "Every time he would go swimming or something I was with him and I just wasn't that time," said his cousin and best friend David Soileau.
Visitation is Wednesday at four o'clock at Ardoin Funeral Home at 709 West Main Street in Ville Platte. Funeral services are Thursday at two o'clock at Friendship Baptist Church in Pine Prairie.
