PORT BARRE, La. (AP) - A vigil will be held in the Port Barre courtyard of the town square for the victims of last week's deadly school bus accident.
Officials say the 7 p.m. vigil Friday is being held in remembrance of 5-year-old Karen Stoute, who died in the wreck, and to support the recovery of 15-year-old Colby Richard, bus driver and Mayor Gil Savoie and the 19 other students injured when a tractor-trailer plowed into the back of the bus.
Organizer Nichole Hatten said that clergymen are asked to participate as is anyone who "feels compelled to say a few words" about the accident.
J.B. Hunt representatives met privately this week with the students' parents. St. Landry Parish Schools Superintendent Michael Nassif says they formally apologized and turned over the tractor-trailer's black box data, which indicated the driver did not apply his brakes before colliding with the school bus.
