PHOENIX (AP) - Attorneys for a woman charged with killing her lover are trying to portray the victim as a liar and cheat who repeatedly deceived his girlfriends in the months before his death.

Jodi Arias is accused of shooting, stabbing and slitting the throat of 30-year-old Travis Alexander in 2008, leaving behind a bloody scene authorities have described as among the most gruesome they'd ever seen.

Defense attorneys began their case Tuesday.

Wednesday's first witness was Alexander's ex-girlfriend, who testified that he cheated on her with Arias and lied about being a virgin.

If convicted in the ongoing trial in Phoenix, Arias could face the death penalty.

She claims she killed Alexander in self-defense, while prosecutors say it was a premeditated murder set off by rage and jealousy.
