A Centerville man was killed Monday in a single-vehicle accident on La. 317.
Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated the crash that occurred at 1:30 p.m. about four miles south of the Intracoastal Waterway.
Killed in the crash was 22-year-old David Champagne of Centerville, state police report. Champagne was killed when the vehicle he was a passenger in ran off the road and struck a tree. Champagne, who was not wearing his seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle. He was transported to a local area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Blake Rivere, 22, of Centerville, was driving south on La. 317 in a 2005 Dodge pick-up. Police say Rivere was approaching a curve in the roadway when he ran off the right side of the road. Rivere overcorrected and ran off the left side of the road striking a tree with the passenger side of the vehicle. Rivere was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash and was transported to a local area hospital with moderate injuries. Blood and urine samples were obtained from Rivere and submitted to Louisiana State Police Crime Lab where toxicology results are pending.
Louisiana State Police remind everyone the importance of wearing a seatbelt when traveling in a motor vehicle. Wearing a seatbelt will reduce the risk of injury in most crashes.
