Victim Identified in Lafayette Apartment Fire

The victim is identified as 44 year old Michael Evans. Firefighters say Evans did smoke, and the blaze began from a cigarette. Firefighters also say the fire began on a sofa. Evans was also on oxygen, which accelerated the blaze.

One man has died after fire broke out at a Lafayette apartment complex around 8:30 this morning. It happened at 203 D Long Plantation Blvd across from River Ranch in Lafayette. Paramedics rushed to the scene after a report of multiple victims.

A female from apartment D was taken to the hospital.

Lafayette Fire Department spokesman Alton Trahan said the fire destroyed 75% of one apartment's interior.

Firefighters are at the scene right now and KATC is there. We'll have updates as they become available and full reports at 5 and 6 on TV3.
