A 28-yar-old Army veteran has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the 2010 slaying of a soldier at Fort Polk.
Marcus Patterson Carey also pleaded guilty Wednesday to attempted murder in an attack on a second soldier at the Army base in Vernon Parish. Sentencing is set for Sept. 19.
Carey and soldier Howard Wayne Alley were staying at the Fort Polk apartment of Byron Whitcomb on the morning of June 19, 2010.
According to court papers, Whitcomb and Alley were sleeping in the living room. Officials said Carey woke up and began attacking Whitcomb, striking him in the head with the hammer and stabbing him numerous times. Whitcomb bled to death.
Carey also attacked Alley. He was able to escape to a neighbor's apartment.
