ABBEVILLE, La. (AP) - The Vermilion Parish Police Jury has voted to delay until October putting a proposed 5.7-mill property tax for
coastal storm protection before voters.
The tax, if passed, would fund $20 million in bonds for coastal protection.
The jury initially agreed at its last meeting in February to have the proposal put on the ballot in a special election in March.
On Monday, jurors decided they could better serve parish residents by placing the matter on a fall ballot.
Police Jury President Wayne Touchet said there were several reasons for delaying the action, including a parish cost of $68,000
to hold a special election.
