Five fishing piers set to be removed in Vermilion Parish might stay, after all. At its meeting Monday night, the Vermilion Parish Police Jury voted to rescind the motion to remove the popular fishing piers, which are along LA Hwy 82 between Forked Island and Pecan Island. Not only are they popular fishing spots, nearby businesses like Stelly's Grocery, say its business could suffer because they'd sell fewer licenses, supplies and bait.
Jurors had previously closed the piers after an inspection deemed them unsafe, and the police jury was considering removing them altogether. Monday night's move, though, may save the piers. The condition of the piers will be discussed at an upcoming Public Work Committee meeting. Members will discuss whether repairs are feasible. The committee meeting is scheduled for April 24.
