ABBEVLLE, La. (AP) - The Vermilion Parish school system is expanding a different kind of summer school with the help of grant funding from the United Way of Acadiana.
The Advocate reports the district received $25,000 from the nonprofit agency to offer a developmental kindergarten class this summer to help 30 struggling students prepare for the first grade.
Ann Hardy, elementary supervisor for the Vermilion Parish school system, says the Kindergarten Intervention Developing Successful Students program targets kindergarten students who have been recommended for retention or barely met the criteria for promotion.
She says the district began the program last year with 35 kindergarten students using U.S. Department of Education Gulf Coast Recovery grant funding.
