AMITE, La. (AP) - The first-degree murder trial of Michael
Varnado, accused of killing a mother and her two children, has been
delayed for a second time.
State District Judge Ray Schutz agreed Wednesday that both the
prosecution and defense need more time to prepare for the trial.
Schutz ruled that a third preliminary
hearing in the case would be held Oct. 13.
Varnado is accused of smothering his girlfriend, 20-year-old
Quantell Roberts of Hammond; setting her FEMA trailer on fire; and
leaving her infant and toddler behind in the burning trailer on
February 16, 2007.
Investigators say the children, not related to Varnado, died of
smoke inhalation.
