SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - A U.S. Defense Department official says the death of a Guantanamo Bay prisoner in September is being ruled a suicide.
The official says Adnan Latif took an overdose of psychiatric medication though it's not yet clear how he collected enough to kill himself. The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the results have not been officially released. The military had been waiting to disclose the cause of death until Latif's remains were sent back to his native Yemen.
Latif is the seventh Guantanamo prisoner to commit suicide. He had a history of mental illness and clashes with guards. He had been held without charge for more than a decade. His lawyer is skeptical that the death was a suicide.
