Another arrest has been made in the Curious Goods synthetic marijuana investigation - this one involving the store in Vermilion Parish. Lafayette Metro Narcotics arrested Ronald Feritta on a Vermilion Municipal Narcotics Task Force warrant. Vemilion agents bought two products which tested positive for synthetic cannabinoids. The products, Mr. Miyagi Timeout and Mr. Miyagi Warpaint, tested positive at the Acadiana Crime Lab, according to Sheriff Mike Couvillon. Feritta, of Lafayette, is charged with two counts of distribution of synthetic cannabinoids.
Agents started their investigation after several complaints about the business, Sheriff Mike Couvillon said. Potpourri, also known as "legal weed" is packaged and sold as not for human consumption, but the sheriff said people are smoking it to get high. The effect is similar to marijuana. "We have had a spike in calls with people having health issues after smoking these items, some of which had to be rushed to the hospital," Couvillon said. "The tough thing about making cases on this "legal weed" is that the chemical compound in the item changes so fast, that on many of them the existing law on the books does not cover the chemicals used to make the product."
Curious Goods is located on Hwy 14 between Nunez and Kaplan. Feritta is in the Vermilion Parish Jail on $95,000 bond.
