Update: Train Derailment in Erath

According to Vermilion Parish Sheriff Mike Couvillon, at approximately 10:20 am this morning July 8, 2010 the Sheriff’s Office responded to a Train Derailment just outside of the city limits of Erath.

 

                Sheriff Couvillon says that the train which is owned by La. Delta Railroads of 402 West Washington Street New Iberia, La. was traveling in a westbound direction just west of Erath when for unknown reasons a wooden bridge it was passing over gave way after the main train and four (4) other freight cars passed over.

 

                Sheriff Couvillon further stated that the fifth (5) freight car which was filled with rice collapsed and was disengaged from the main unit causing it to overturn.

 

                Sheriff Couvillon further stated that the train was pulling a total of eight (8) freight cars at the time of the derailment.

 

                Finally, Sheriff Couvilon says that no one was injured in the derailment.
