First responders, at the scene of an 18-wheeler fire in the 4100 block of US 90, report that the blaze was extinguished before it could spread to the cargo area of the rig.
Fire investigators indicated that the driver of the rig advised that he had heard "a pop" within the motor and pulled over to attempt to use a fire extinguisher. Firefighters were called when the driver's attempt to put out the blaze was unsuccessful, firefighters told KATC. Passers-by said they witnessed flames seven or eight feet high emanating from the truck.
Broussard Police Chief Brannon Decou were able to contain the blaze within the cab of the vehicle and the engine compartment. Witnesses reported flames seven or eight feet high emanating from the rig.
Decou said that traffic continues to flow on two lanes of the highway, although the third, far-right lane remains closed at this time.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, firefighters said.
