KATC has learned the pilot who crashed near Estherwood in Acadia Parish crashed when the plane malfunctioned. He ejected from the plane and landed safely using a parachute. The pilot was the only person onboard and has minor injuries to his foot.
The pilot experienced trouble when he reached 3,000 feet and parachuted at 2,500 feet. The Federal Avaiation Administration is en route. The pilot, whose name has not been released, is from Lafayette and is an aerobatic pilot who was flying his plane on a test run, Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office spokesperson Maxine Trahan said. Aerobatic planes are used for exhibitions and competitions.
