Update: Missing Fisherman Found Dead in Vermilion Parish

UPDATE:
At around 3:00pm Saturday, the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office along with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries found the body of 56 year old Jullien Gajan Jr. of Abbeville, reported missing Thursday. According to witnesses, Mr. Gajan left in his boat to go hunting Wednesday and never returned. According to Sheriff Mike Couvillon, the body was located on a levee in a marshy area East of White Lake. The Sheriff says that at this point the cause of death is not certain and is pending the Coroner's investigation. However, the Sheriff says that the death appears to be the result of a gunshot wound and is under investigation. No further details are being released at this time due to investigative reasons.

Four agencies are searching for a missing commercial fisherman in Vermilion Parish. Officials say the man may have been missing since Wednesday afternoon. They began searching Thursday evening.

The search and rescue team was stationed at Hebert's Landing in Forked Island on Friday. The team is made up of four agencies: Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries, Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office, U.S. Coast Guard, and Angola State Penitentiary Chase Team and K9 unit.

"We'll search until we've exhausted our resources or until we find him," said Bobby Buatt, with Wildlife and Fisheries."

Buatt says all four agencies are needed for the type of search their doing.

"The search are encompasses a good deal of marsh land. The water is not very deep. We've conducted foot searches, searches by air, and searches by boat as well."

Officials say the missing man, who is a commercial fisherman, would be use to these waters.

"The individual that we're looking for is very knowledgeable of the area and has spent quite a bit of time in the outdoors and is a very experienced boater."

Officials did say that the recent weather has been brutal. They say the water Friday morning had a layer of ice and was choppy. But, they won't speculate whether or not the missing boater could survive in those conditions.

"When our resources are exhausted then we'll suspend the search, until new evidence surfaces and then we'll check all those leads as well."

Officials are asking anyone who may help in finding the missing fisherman to call Wildlife and Fisheries at (225)765-2706, or the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office at (337) 893-0871.
