The identity of the missing boater found dead in Lake Dauterive has been confirmed as 48-year-old Mark Courville of New Iberia.
"The family said he was just going to out for a quick run on the lake. From what I understand he's used to going out on the lake and they don't know what happened from that point. Never came back," said Kathy Standridge.
Standridge lives here at Lake Dauterive Landing, the last 24 hours has been a whirlwind for her and other lake residents.
"We knew a lot of the family, I mean everybody at the lake knows everybody and it's really hard," said Standridge.
Residents said Courville had just gone out for a quick trip around 5:00 p.m., just a few hours later he was reported missing. The Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office said another boater had seen Courville's boat running unattended on the lake and called 9-1-1 to report him missing.
"The boat was going in a circle and from that point they don't know what happened," said Standridge.
After 16 hours, Lt. Ryan Turner with the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office said deputies and Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agents located Courville's body in the water around 12:30 Sunday afternoon. They do not suspect foul play.
"Very unfortunate these things happen. As far as what cause and what was the issue in this case we're still trying to piece that together," said Turner.
Turner said they're still investigating whether or not Courville was wearing a life jacket. An official cause of death has not been determined pending an autopsy.
