UPDATE: Shooting Victim and Suspect Had History
As a result of the ongoing investigation, detectives discovered that the victim of the shooting and the suspect had a previous encounter in July of 2005. The victim, who is identified as David Trahan (40) of Lafayette, was issued a misdemeanor summons by the Lafayette Police Department for painting "Pedophile" on the roof of the suspect's, Jerry Steinle (60), residence at 345 Rena Drive. On the day of the shooting Trahan was beneath the carport area of the residence defacing the door when he was confronted by Steinle. A disturbance ensued and Steinle allegedly shot Trahan multiple times. Trahan then ran into the front yard where he collapsed and died. Jerry Steinle was arrested and charged with 2nd Degree Murder on the evening of the shooting. The case remains under investigation.
Rena Drive Shooting Investigated

On December 10, 2009, at approximately 3:11 pm, officers with the Lafayette Police Department responded to 345 Rena Drive regarding a shooting. When officers arrived on the scene they found a male subject lying dead in the front yard of the residence. Investigators indicate that a disturbance occurred between the victim, a 40 year old male of Lafayette, and the shooter, a 60 year old male. The shooter, who resides at the residence, allegedly produced a gun and shot the victim. The victim died a short time later in the front yard of the residence.
The shooter was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Lafayette Police Department for questioning. The shooting remains under investigation.
