UPDATE: The HR recommendation regarding Stephen Hurst will not be added to the agenda tomorrow.
The HR department has not completed their investigation/recommendation at this time.
As soon as it is completed, it will be placed on the agenda.
The Lafayette Parish School Board must approve the resignation of an arrested Acadiana High teacher. Stephen Hurst is accused of inviting students to his apartment and videotaping them having sex. Hurst is on leave with pay, but he turned in his letter of resignation last week. However, the board must approve all resignations, so until that happens, Hurst will remain on leave with pay. Right now, the item is not on the board's agenda for their Wednesday meeting, but that could still change.
An Acadiana high school teacher is behind bars for allegedly allowing students to have sex in his Lafayette apartment while he filmed them. 37 year old Stephen Mckay Hurst is a 10th grade English teacher. He was arrested on March, 26th. Mckay is charged with federal counts of sexual exploitation of children for the purpose of producing child pornography and sexual exploitation of children.
Former students of Hurst say they are very much surprised by the news. They say he is the most popular teacher at their school. "He's the funniest person on Earth; if you go to class he's going to put a smile on your face," said Dakota Richie. Richie and classmate Correy Sensat say they've both heard stories but believe none of them. "It was a student that graduated already or was a senior, I'm not sure, and something about him and his girl friend were taped having sex in his house and he got caught."
Sensat said, "I didn't believe it at first, then I walked by his class and I saw the bus. I realized Hurst hadn't been there for like a week."
Hurst was picked up by the FBI according to the court documents; his leasing agent says young people frequent his apartment often. The document states the English teacher would also communicate to his students via texts. "I know for a fact he text some of the seniors, some of the guys. I don't know, but I know he was always texting in class," said Sensat.
Richie said he won't believe it until he's see a video.
Hurst has been on leave with pay since last week. The teacher will remain in jail until he goes to trial.
