A Coast Guard auxillary pilot en route from Chennault to Orange, Texas, lost power aboard his Piper Cherokee and managed to crash land the plane on the median of LA 108, escaping with only a minor bump to his head, according to law enforcement on the scene.
Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to the scene late Friday afternoon.
Trooper James Anderson said that the Piper Cherokee, small-engine plane came to rest shortly after 5 p.m. in the westbound lane of the highway near the Citgo Refinery in Calcasieu Parish. The pilot was noted for skillful landing of the plane, a touchdown that resulted in taking out only a single power line.
Anderson said that the pilot had just flown a mission and had dropped off a passenger when the plane lost power. The crash is currently under investigation.
