NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A University of New Orleans student and Army veteran injured in the line of duty was shot and killed a few blocks from the school's campus.
Police say 22-year-old Lars Stiaes was found shot about 8 p.m. Wednesday. Investigators believe Stiaes ran to a gas station after being shot and collapsed there. Emergency crews transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
His family told WDSU-TV that Stiaes was a freshman marketing major at UNO, and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army last March after being injured while serving in Afghanistan. Stiaes is also the nephew of state Rep. Charmaine Marchand Stiaes, a New Orleans Democrat.
A university statement Thursday said the school was making counselors available to students who felt they needed them following the shooting.
