NEW ORLEANS (AP) - President Barack Obama has nominated University of New Orleans professor Norma Jean Mattei to the Mississippi River Commission, which oversees a drainage basin covering 41 percent of the nation.
Private civil engineers and representatives from the Army Corps of Engineers and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration work to prevent destructive flooding, foster navigation and promote commerce.
Mattei is a professor and chair of UNO's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. She has been a regional director for the American Society of Civil Engineers and chairs the Education Committee for the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying.
The U.S. Senate confirms nominees, who serve 9-year terms.
