UNO Faces Tough Budget Future without Federal Cash

BATON ROUGE, La. - The University of New Orleans is
receiving $26 million less in state general funding this year than two years ago, though $17 million in federal stimulus money offset some state cuts on a one-time basis. That's according to the LSU Board of Regents.
But with stimulus money used up, UNO faces difficult financial decisions.
State lawmakers and Gov. Bobby Jindal's administration have warned that the state likely won't be able to use other funding sources when stimulus funding disappears in the upcoming budget year, leaving UNO and other colleges facing sharp budget cuts.
The budget crisis is believed to have been a key reason UNO Chancellor Timothy Ryan left UNO Sept. 16. Ryan said he was fired but the LSU system, which operates UNO, said he resigned.
