NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans is one of eight cities where 45 students will participate in Union Summer internships.
Union Summer is a 10-week educational internship in which participants are introduced to the local community and labor movement. The program is designed to give young activists on-the-ground experience in organizing, community activism and coalition building.
The interns' assignments may include working on state legislative issues, ranging from collective bargaining rights to voting rights, speaking to workers in their homes or at their workplaces to find out what they'd like to change about their jobs, planning and participating in marches, or assisting in building community, labor and religious partnerships and activities.
