LAFAYETTE, La. - The Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team earned the No.5 seed at the Sun Belt Conference Tennis Championship and will face No.12 Western Kentucky in the first round on Thursday at 10 a.m. at Cajun Courts, the conference office announced on Tuesday morning.
"We are very pleased with our seed," head coach Greg Harkins said. "We played a good schedule, and I think playing half of the teams in conference has given us an idea of what to expect. We have a great opportunity at our home court. We couldn't ask for a better place to be. I can't be more excited, and we look forward to first ball at 10 a.m. Thursday."
The winner of the contest is slated to face fourth seeded South Alabama in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Championship on Friday at 10 a.m.
Louisiana (13-11) went 9-6 at Cajun Courts in 2013. The Cajuns went 2-4 against Sun Belt opponents this season with the wins coming against Middle Tennessee and Arkansas State. The Cajuns are 6-0 all-time against WKU.
Junior Sandra Ahlqvist paces the team with a 13-7 record in singles competition, while the duo of Melissa Burckhartt and Juliette Clement hold a 15-3 mark in doubles play.
The Hilltoppers (10-7) have won four straight matches coming into the Sun Belt Championships. WKU is 0-2 in the squads only two meetings against SBC opponents. Western Kentucky is led by Lauren Freeman with a 7-10 record in singles.
"We look forward to hosting the other teams from the conference," Harkins added. "This should be a great tournament with a lot of great tennis."
