LAFAYETTE, La. -- Braile Fields, who earned all-state honors as a senior at Leesville High, has signed a national letter of intent to attend Louisiana and play women's basketball beginning in the fall of 2013. The signing was announced by head coach Garry Brodhead on Thursday, the second day of the spring signing period.
Fields joins Gabrielle Alexander (Bogalusa, La), Jeremica Edwards (New Orleans, La./Warren Easton), Jaylyn Gordon (Edgard, La./West St. John), Jodi Quinn (St. Martinville, La./St. Thomas More) and Melody Williams (Fort Worth, Texas/THESA), each of whom signed with the Ragin' Cajuns during the early signing period in November.
"I am really excited about having Braile join our program. She is another Louisiana player who should fit into our system pretty well," Brodhead said.
"We liked her because she is athletic, can really shoot the ball and has pretty good size. You usually can't find shooters who can defend so she should be able to quickly pick up how we like to play and help us out immediately next year," Brodhead added.
Fields, a 5-9 shooting guard from Leesville, La. averaged 24.6 points, 7.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game in helping Leesville High to the quarterfinals of the state tournament for the first time in school history. She scored a school record 669 points en route to earning district MVP and first team All-Central Louisiana honors.
She was coached at Leesville by Amanda Clemons.
Fields played her freshman and sophomore seasons at Pickering High and was forced to sit out her junior year after transferring to Leesville.
"I really like how the team is shaping up for next year," Brodhead said. "We have such a good nucleus coming back and we added to it five freshmen who should be able to push us to another level and give us the depth that we need to play our style of basketball for 40 minutes each night."
