First-year head coach Garry Brodhead unveiled the Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball schedule for his inaugural campaign on Tuesday.
The 2012-13 season schedule features 15 home games and an expanded Sun Belt Conference schedule. Implementing a double round robin format, the SBC schedule moves to 20 games this season up from 16 in years past.
The Brodhead era kicks off Friday, Nov. 9 at Southern at 7:00 p.m.
"We are excited about our first year here at UL and the opportunity to play some quality teams and programs this upcoming season," Brodhead said. "One thing I always preach is to take one possession at a time and make sure we are prepared before we look at who we have in front of us. That is going to be very key this year with all of the newcomers we have joining the program."
The Cajuns home opener against LSU-Shreveport is set for Nov. 12 at Earl K. Long Gym at 7:00 p.m.
Road games on Nov. 16 and Nov. 19 against Nebraska-Omaha and Nicholls State precede the Sun Belt Conference opener at home against the defending Sun Belt regular season champions Middle Tennessee on Nov. 24.
"We are looking forward to competing in the Sun Belt," Brodhead mentioned. "The SBC is a great league and is very comparable to the Southland Conference, which we were used to playing in at McNeese State. We start league play very early this season and have a great opportunity to see what we are made of, playing one of the top tier teams in the conference (Middle Tennessee). We are very excited and are looking forward to a great year of Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball!"
Louisiana wraps up the season's first month on the road facing Tulane on Nov. 28 in New Orleans, then travel to Denton, Texas one final time for a Sun Belt meeting with North Texas on Dec. 1. NT departs for Conference USA in 2013.
Following a week off for University-administered final exams, the Cajuns will be back in Lafayette where they will play host to their longest homestand of the year. The four-game stretch, all at Earl K. Long Gym, features Jackson State (Dec. 10), New Orleans (Dec. 13), UC Riverside (Dec. 17) and Southern-New Orleans (Dec. 19).
Following their final non-conference contests of the year, the Ragin' Cajuns resume Sun Belt action when they travel to Jonesboro, Ark. to take on SBC foe Arkansas State on Dec. 22. A week later, UL returns to
action on Dec. 29 to play UALR in their first of five doubleheaders in the Cajundome.
Louisiana will begin the New Year on a Florida swing where they will travel to Boca Raton and Miami to face Florida Atlantic (Jan. 2) and FIU (Jan. 5), before hosting South Alabama (Jan. 9) at E.K. Long and Arkansas State (Jan. 12) in the Cajundome.
The Cajuns travel to Bowling Green, Ky. and Murfreesboro, Tenn. to play Western Kentucky (Jan. 16) and Middle Tennessee (Jan. 19) before wraping up their January slate of games with back-to-back home contests against FIU on Jan. 23 and North Texas on Jan. 30.
The Ragin' Cajuns will make three additional appearances in the Cajundome in February, where they will host La.-Monroe (Feb. 9), Florida Atlantic (Feb. 16) and Western Kentucky (Feb. 23), before concluding the regular season with road contests at UALR (Feb. 27) and La.-Monroe (Mar. 2).
The Sun Belt Conference Tournament is scheduled for March 8-11 in Hot Springs, Ark., at the Summit Arena-Hot Springs Convention Center complex.
Brodhead, a 1980 UL graduate who is a 16-year veteran of women's basketball coaching, was named head women's basketball coach of the Ragin' Cajuns in April 2012. Brodhead, who most recently served as associate head coach at McNeese State, became the 12th head coach in UL program history.
Brodhead is best known for his accomplishments during a 10-year tenure as the girl's basketball coach at Teurlings Catholic High Shool in Lafayette, where he compiled a 297-78 record, winning one state title.
