LAFAYETTE - The Louisiana volleyball team wraps up its non-conference schedule beginning Friday when it travels to Oxford, Miss., to compete in the Ole Miss Rebel Classic at the Gillom Sports Center.
The Ragin' Cajuns (8-3) will open play against Chattanooga (0-12) on Friday at 4:30 p.m., before resuming action on Saturday against Southern Miss (9-3) at 2 p.m., and host Ole Miss (7-3) at 7. Live statistics for all three matches, and a live video stream (subscription required) of the Ragin' Cajuns match with Ole Miss, will be available on the volleyball schedule page at RaginCajuns.com.
In the midst of a nine-match roadtrip, Louisiana has played in three tournaments this season where it has posted a combined 6-3 record. The Ragin' Cajuns finished second overall last week at the Benson's Group Hospitality Invitational earning victories over UNC Greensboro and North Florida while falling to host Georgia.
"I think that the reality is we have to make sure that our offense is running efficiently," head coach Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot said. "In the three losses that we've had (this season) is when our offense hasn't run as efficient as it should. That's what we've been working on in the last few days, making adjustments and tweaking things within our offensive scheme."
Sara Mossakowski and Chanelle Gardner, a St. Martinville native, were each named to the all-tournament team last week - the second time the duo has earned all-tournament honors this season.
Lavinia Tataran (2.88 kills per set), Mossakowski (2.78) and Kaylee Nemeth (2.17) are the top hitters for Louisiana. Andrea Hole leads the Ragin' Cajuns, and is fourth in the Sun Belt Conference, in assists at 9.60 per set while Taylor Meade leads the SBC, and is 43rd nationally, with 16 service aces on the season.
Defensively, libero Caitlyn Auxilien leads Louisiana in digs with 4.17 per set. The Mandeville native enters the weekend with 936 career digs - the fourth-most by a Ragin' Cajun in the rally-scoring era. Hole is next in digs (2.96/set) for Louisiana while Gardner leads the team, and is fourth in the SBC, with 1.04 blocks per set.
"This season, Caitlyn has really stepped up and we've asked her to be our floor leader on defense," Mazeitis-Fontenot said. "She has taken that (libero) job and really made it personal in terms of getting to the ball and making sure everybody on the floor is in their proper position. She has done a great job in mastering our defense."
After concluding play in Oxford, the Ragin' Cajuns will begin Sun Belt Conference play on Friday, Sept. 27 at league newcomer Texas State in a 6:30 p.m. contest. Louisiana will conclude its first week of league play the following day when it faces fellow newcomer UT Arlington on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 7.
