LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - Students at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette have approved a transportation services fee referendum.
The Advertiser reports the referendum for a student self-assessed fee, which passed 939 in favor to 854 against, will raise the current $25 transportation fee each spring and fall semester to $50 and from $12.50 each summer to $25.
The fee increase will begin with the upcoming fall semester.
David Neef, president of the UL Student Government Association, says the extra money will be used to provide students with newer buses, more comfortable bus stops and an expanded night shuttle system.
The university estimates that the student self-assessed fee will generate $750,000 in additional revenue each academic year.
