After a week of practice under their belt, the Ragin' Cajuns soccer team gears up for the fourth annual Alumni Exhibition on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. at the Ragin' Cajuns Soccer/Track Facility.
The team began preseason practice last Thursday and will get some live action in tomorrow against former UL players before they kick off the 2012 campaign on Sunday, Aug. 19 at McNeese State at 1:00 p.m..
Head coach Scot Wieland begins his eighth season and welcomes back 15 members from the 2011 roster, including eight returning seniors. UL got off to their best start in program history last season at 4-1-1.
Senior Kayla Henrie and junior Shelby Isley seek to build off successful seasons where both players netted four goals to lead the Cajuns in 2011. Senior forward Cayla Chatman will give the offense a boost after playing just four games a year ago due to an injury. Chatman is fourth on the UL all-time career goals scored list (13).
Senior goalkeeper Amanda Moorefield leads a Louisiana defense that should be difficult to score on this season as she enters the 2012 season as the Ragin' Cajuns all-time career wins leader (17). The defense also returns second team All-Sun Belt selection sophomore Grace Howell-Harries and senior Gayla Foster, who looks to bounce back from an injury plagued 2011 campaign.
The 2012 squad will go up against 14 former Cajuns on Saturday, including all-time career leading goal scorer Kelli Jestes (21) and points leader Courtney Hofland (52). Hofland (84) and Jestes (80) sit one and two on the career list of matches played in a Louisiana uniform, respectively.
Following the season opener against McNeese State, the Cajuns will host Prairie View A&M at the Cajuns Soccer/Soccer Facility on Friday, Aug. 24 at 7 p.m.
